Graduation 2025: Jay Tonks named Carpe Diem Award winner

At ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV University, the Carpe Diem Award represents the pinnacle of senior achievement—a testament to students who fully embody leadership, service, and the spirit of the university’s mission. This year, that honor belongs to James "Jay" Tonks, a student whose legacy will be woven into the fabric of ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV for years to come.
From his first days on campus, Jay embodied the heart of a true Laker: committed, engaged, and passionate. As an Ambassador, he quickly immersed himself in every facet of campus life, developing his speaking skills, forging new connections, and building his confidence.
As president of ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Student Government and the student representative on the Board of Trustees, Jay championed the student voice. His ability to unite students, foster meaningful dialogue, and implement impactful initiatives significantly enriched the campus experience. A hallmark of his leadership style has been his willingness to listen and ensure everyone feels heard, even when outcomes did not align with every viewpoint.
Jay’s influence extended far beyond boardrooms and student forums. With an infectious enthusiasm for athletics, he became a driving force behind ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV’s sports community. Through his work in social media, writing, and broadcasting with ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Athletics, Jay elevated the visibility of the Lakers, ensuring student-athletes were celebrated not just for their victories but for their stories and spirit. His efforts to strengthen connections between Athletics and the wider campus community helped build Laker pride that will endure well beyond his graduation.
Among the blessings Jay cherishes most is the support of his loving family. He also counts himself fortunate to have been mentored by Dr. John Olszowka and Dr. John Parente, who helped him chart a path toward a major he embraced wholeheartedly—Sport Business Management. After graduation, Jay plans to pursue a career in intercollegiate athletics.
True to the Mercy mission, Jay also embraced the spirit of service through his work at the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home, where he sought to help veterans live in the moment. He listened to their stories, played bingo and board games, and made root beer floats—simple joys that left lasting impressions.
In every aspect of university life, Jay Tonks seized the day. His unwavering commitment to leadership, service, and community perfectly reflects the values celebrated by the Carpe Diem Award. As ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV prepares to send another graduating class into the world, Jay’s impact stands as a shining example of what it means to live with purpose, passion, and pride.
